2nd Annual New England Music Awards pre-party 4/12/13

119 Gallery
Lowell MA

The main event was hosted at UnchARTed, but 119 stepped up to showcase other New England performers; Empty Phrases (Ben Raymon, Evan Walters, Andrew Denni, and Justin Cole), Inspector 34 (Jimm Warren),  and Birdorgan.

I was upstairs, and when I recognized Marc’s Gretsch, I ran down to complete my set up during their warm up. I recently switched my gear from the heavy wood box to a svelt Samsonite suitcase courtesy of Eric Sack and Felicia Sullivan.

2K Joe Brown is proud to say that his recently acquired recorder did a surprisingly nice job capturing the set, despite the inherent echo of the space and the obscene volumes attained.

Phog Masheen 3/15/13

Photo of Phog Masheeen by OCNoise

119 Gallery, 119 Chelmsford St., Lowell MA

Phog Masheeen (Mark Soden and Bill Almas from Costa Mesa, California) use home-brew instruments, common objects, live-mix video, and extended techniques involving dry ice to create a sonic environment that is part Jules Verne submersible, part unbalanced washing machine on the spin cycle. That’s right – dry ice. AND the heating element from an E-Z Bake Oven.

BiRdOrGaN features Dei Xhrist (voice), Marc Bisson (guitar), Mike Funaiole (analog synth), Michael Dailey (voice, drums, general mayhem) with live video projection by Gregory Kowalski.

Vanessa Lefabvre was kind enough to record; five will get you ten that it will be on the 2013 Birdorgan CD.

X-Fest 2013

Artwork IS Work

The region’s biggest and most challenging showcase of local talent, X-Fest draws on the network of musicians who have graced 119 Gallery. They are thrown willy-nilly in to impromptu trios and quartets, preferably in first time combinations, to challenge their ability to improvise and adapt. This is on top of whatever equipment and wardrobe failures that are inherent at any festival. While the event is free (this year, the gallery received a grant to help things along), some performers travel from several states away to couch surf and sell/trade their wares, and food is donated by local performers and friends. Help out by being here, opening your ears, and throwing some money around.
Cancellations and swaps are not listed here.

The 14 minute set at 7PM at the founders monument had Marc on a First Act acoustic, contact mic, and Honeytone; Mike F on a floor tom and scuffing about on some cymbals, and Mike F with one of those cardboard tubes with a spring sticking, and I waved a length of PVC tubing with The World’s Loudest Sheet of Plastic taped to it like a nihilistic flag. We then wobble-wobbled some plastic sheets which shattered out a billion pieces of transparent shards.

In the audience were a couple of French working on a documentary about music, art, and the joy artists derive from their work.  We did a circular interview with the filmographer while the cameraman struggled with her fading power supply.

The Studio Track

Considering that birdorgan’s audio bon mots on First Reenactment of the Fifth and One-Halfth Defenestration of Prog are sound checks, we’ve taken a dramatic technical departure to record a track for Abe Taber’s upcoming CD benefit for 119 Gallery.

That means, it’s a studio track. While I thank Norman A Lariviere for tolerating us in his studio, man am I glad I took up knitting.

Mike F/Impossible Sound had his way with it, and thus Kummerspeck. Unfortunately I don’t have the ability to plunk audio here.

The OBE Show

Milly’s Tavern, 500 Commercial Street, Manchester NH

After the fiasco of playing at Grand last year, it is now birdorgan policy to not play at any gig if the person booking us has never seen us. In this case, Paul and Carolina have indeed seen us and lived to book us at a brewpub that would normally not let the likes of us onstage, let alone tell anyone that we’re coming. Is the pub crowd ready? Are we ready? Are we getting free drinks?
The OBE Show (Out of Body Experience) is an art and music afternoon that is open to all ages. As the birdorgan policy is a one way deal, I’ve never been to one of these events, and the only time’ I’ve been to Milly’s was during the 2008 Kucinich election watch. Not that I helped with the campaign – Vermin Supreme was running on the Republican ticket that year, and you couldn’t get near the Rodham-Clinton or Obama parties.

Lot of info going on here.

Songs for a song

March 16, 2012

The House of Goings-On, Manchester NH
Doors at 7
$5+ for the travelers

Hello Kath; I have an event for you to post on Goodgood.

Event title: Songs for a song
Location: House of Goings-On, 301 Laurel Street, Manchester
Date and time: March 16, 2012; 7PM potluck, 8PM music
Cost: $5+ suggested donation

Cellist Valerie Keuhne of Brooklyn is an electrically charged virtuoso of all purpose cello. Dynamic performer, fearless improviser, songwriter, vocalist, and classically trained connoisseur of Bach and Britten, Valerie devotes formidable heart, intellect, creativity, and time to cross-pollinating sundry genres. Armed with finesse, Valerie is impressively present on stage, rendering poignant punctuations of changeable emotional weather. In any setting, her instrument aches with human implications and fiendish alien fuel. Her tour up the coast brings new, shorter compositions in short song structure to smaller venues offering an immersive listening experience.
Joining Valerie is Clara Engle, a soloist whose “voice comes… from that deepest of all places, imaginative space, from which she visually retrieves an inner landscape converted by breath into the rock equivalent of poetry. Rarely has a voice sounded so authoritative, so unapologetic in its disclosures, so sure of its direction in going home into song.” (Jeremy Reed).
Rounding out the evening will be Steve Norton, a musician with a long and colorful history woven through the Boston improvisation scene; video artist Greg Kowalski; and Marc Bisson, Mike Dailey Jr., Mike Fun, and dei xhrist of Birdorgan.

Flopera House Awards Ceremony

Flopera House, Congress St., Boston MA

Plus, I never play too long.

Plus, I never play too long.

(view Shoe’s Flickr stream)

The building which houses the Flopera, formerly the Floft, is going to the great fail in city planning and getting torn down so pedestrians can find more convenient coffee. Thus, the final shebang is “the grandest of all traditions – a competitive talent & awards show judged by a celebrity panel of [our] peers.

From the Fleisenberg teaser copy:

1. What in the hell is the flopera awards show?
This show is for real. There will be 2 rounds of performances. The initial round will be short format, with pieces running 2 – 3 minutes. The judges will determine who they want to hear more from in a second round of 4 – 5 performances. Awards will be given out, and trust me when I say, everybody is a wiener.

2. Really?
Did I mention that this show is for real? Because it is. Really.

3. Meet your players

Andrew Neumann
David Kontak
Eric Dahlman
Howard Martin/ Michael Rosenstein/ Morgan Evans-Weiler
id m theftable

4. Meet your judges

flandrew fleisenberg – long time listener, first time caller and your dear friend

5. Judgement Day
The specially trained judges will be evaluating the works within the CPECAH scale:
Creativity
Professionalism
Extended Technique
Courtesousnessness
Attention to detail
Hijinx

6. What’s the deal with the awards
The word ‘WOW’ gets thrown around time and again and sometimes undeservedly so. But these awards, ohh these awards, are something something something…

7. Special performances
Throughout the evening we will be treated to extra special performances from:
Bodydrama
VJ HEXbeam!
and a special 8-track dj set from dj jburgio

8. Why is this night different than any other night?
Oh so many nights I buy all the beer, the late night delivery food and then clean up after all of y’all. not anymore baby – that’s right, my cup fillith over tonight. libations, temptations, and etc snacks are all on you. fill’er up buttercup, please act responsibly and over indulge this evening. and then when it’s over, we can all clean up the mess together.

Geno’s Rock Circus Movie Premiere w/ Dementia 5 & Johnny Cremains

March 30, 2012
Geno’s Rock Club, Portland ME
Doors at8, $6

About a year ago, a friend booked Birdorgan at Geno’s, the rock club in downtown Portland that had a former heyday as a strip joint/blue theatre. A tattooed madwoman approached us after, and invited us to run away and join her circus for a night. So we returned a colder evening, crammed our bit to fit the filming schedule, and sat back and watched the performers and other players. And we wondered at our casting.

Apparently we made the cut – the editing is done, the sound is mixed, the sequins are shined, and Birdorgan made the press release, rather close to the phrase “best music in New England.” Kudos for alphabetization.

The film showcases the Smoke & Mirror Circus, and paces the action with performances by Birdorgan, Hessian, Johnny Cremains, Sunrunner, Dementia Five and the farewell set of By Blood Alone. I hope the benefit of stage lighting, audio mixing, and photography will support the favorable comparison to Diamanda Galas that I received from one of the carneys.

The po-lease busted this all up because of a technicality over a party permit. They were told by one department that they didn’t need one, told by another they did, and some guy waaaay too young drunkenly tried to pick me up.

Opening Night – Wombat Zone

Wombat Zone, Somerville MA
Friday, 12/2/2011

Right after watching Katrina Galore et al in the opening night of this year’s Slutcracker, I walked over to an apartment in a typical, urban compact residential area to join the Grau Garten set. They set up in the kitchen, and I wove through the crowd ululating through my cell phone and in to Steve Norton’s phone, tempering feedback by moving around in the dining room and entry way.

Grau Garten
   Josh Baker, bicycle wheels, electronics
   Marc Bisson, guitar, objects
Steve Norton, reeds, percussion, celesta, electronics
   Greg Kowalski, live visuals
   + possible guest appearance (me!)
Funny Money (not father & son like the poster says)
